The ASEAN economies have formed the fastest-growing group in the world over the last twenty years and their development has been paralleled by the rapid build-up of infrastructure and transport services. The processes involved in the development of the transport sector - air, land, and sea - within each ASEAN country in particular and within South-East Asia in general, and of linkages intra- and inter-regionally, form the substance of this book. The authors have adopted a developmental approach in their attempt at tracing the evolution of the transport system within the broad economic and social framework of the region. Analyses of the comparative performance of the various ASEAN national transport systems highlight the essential differences and draw from these experiences valuable lessons for those involved in the future development of the sector. The transport policies of governments are examined and evaluated in terms of their success or failure in contributing towards overall national development. In this volume, five researchers, each covering a particular area of specialization, examine the role of transport in the development of the ASEAN countries.
Written with a minimum of technical jargon, the book may be of interest to decision-makers, planners and transport operators, as well as to students and serious observers of the South-East Asian region.
