Most of his stories are the re-crafts of the traditional Japanese legend presented as modernist psychological stories.
The author was strongly against naturalism, but his stories are sometimes wrongly categorized as `slice of life.' He was the first Japanese writer who became popular in the West.
The story `Rashomon' was adapted into a movie in 1950. Since then Kurosawa's popularity has continued to grow.
