Hero of My Heart is a funny, engaging and sexy read which kept me thoroughly entertained.In this story we are introduced to Alasdair Thornham,, (who is a Marquis who also happens to be an opium addict) who came to the rescue of Mary Smith who is the daughter of a vicar. Mary's half brother Matthias was seeking to sell her virginity to cover his gambling debts.When Alasdair and Mary's paths crossed the adventure began. These two were just hilarious together. Despite his opium addiction Alasdair was not going to allow anything or anyone to hurt Mary. Their adventures or should I say misadventures brought them closer together. The passion between them was quite sizzling.In the end I really had to ask myself who was the real hero? In my opinion they were both heroes. Alsadair saved Mary from sullied reputation but she saved him from self-destructing.Overall I found this to be a fantastic read and I am looking forward to more of this author's work.

Alasdair is hoping that if he saves this young woman, maybe it will make up in some small way for all the ill he has wrought over the years. In fact, if he marries this unfortunate woman, make her a Lady and give her all his wealth, saving her from her situation, then he can disappear from the world and live peacefully in his own drug-induced stupor with no more cares, no more worries, and no more tormenting memories.
Yet it might not be as simple as crossing the border into Scotland for a quick elopement. His cousin is hot on his trail, ready to declare the opiate-addicted Alasdair incompetent to hold the title of Marquis of Datchworth and a new bride will definitely hinder his plans. Especially when he can see that pretty little Mary is finally giving Alastair a reason to stay sober.
First Alastair and Mary have to make a mad dash for Scotland before they try to beat Hugh to London.
THOUGHTS:
This was an enjoyable story. My only issue…and keep in mind that I do get all my drug knowledge from shows like the Sopranos, CSI, ER, etc…is that Alasdair’s drug addiction seemed awkward. What I mean is this — for a man at his level of his supposed opiate-addiction, someone who wanted to drift away from the world on an opium high, he could sometimes go pretty long periods without and he also got over his withdrawals really quickly. After taking the drugs, he would only be “out of it” for as long as the story needed him to be so, whenever we needed to see Mary take charge. There were also times he would take the pills and be in a stupor and other where he would be lucid and making decisions rather quickly. The story does make a comment that the pill version of the opiates that Alasdair took wasn’t as bad as those guys who smoked the opiates, but I am not sure if this equates his pill opiates with a level of a valium vs. shooting heroin.
Poor Alastair just needed a hug and a shoulder to cry on from his war traumas rather than a pill.
I liked Alastair and Mary but the addiction seemed to very plot appropriate and not very realistic.

Tragic events in Alasdair Thornham life have caused the Marquess to find himself addicted to opium. We meet him in a gambling hall as he is contemplating ending it all when fate intervenes. A man struts in with Mary Smith on his arm; offering to sell her virtue to the highest bidder. It is clear the young woman is in shock, and being held against her will. The crowd goes wild bidding for her but Alasdair steps in and wins her. He plans to save her by marrying her. The tale that unfolds is sweet, and action packed as these two lost souls find purpose.
Mary Smith is a vicar’s daughter and when her father passed her greedy half-brother spent what comforts they had on booze, women and gambling. When he gets desperate he decides to sells her. Mary finds a surprising hero in the dark, brooding and deliciously handsome Marquess. Mary was funny, a thinker and planner. She tends to see the good in others, but she isn't a fool either. Alasdair has serious issues and instead of dealing with those feelings he prefers to escape into the void opium provides. He doesn't think he is worthy of saving but I did grow fond of him and he has redeemable characteristics. Villains and secrets keep thing interesting as these too set out on their journey to Scotland. Told in present tense it goes back and forth between perspectives helping us gain insight into the characters emotions but at times it pulled me from the tale. Both characters drew me in and I found myself hoping for a happily ever after.
The premise for Hero of My Heart was a good one, with twists, secrets and danger. While I adored the characters, I had issues with historical accuracy in their speech, some of the repeated phrases and the redundancy the perceptive provided. Alasdair is addicted to opium and this thread didn't feel developed enough and was simplistic in its handling. This isn't a demon that you easily shake and while we do see some of the withdrawal symptoms and lapses it wasn't accurately portrayed. Why am I saying it was a good read then you ask? The characters made this enjoyable, and I connected with them. If I let the issues go at its heart this was an entertaining read and I found myself swept up in the events.
