My first graphic novel, so I had no idea what to expect. I liked it, but it was also really weird at the same time? I don’t know what to think about this.
Re-read 2016. Lost a star but still loved the story.
SAGA follows two fugitives, Alana and Marko. They are on the lam because they fell in love, and in that love, they created the narrator of this story, Hazel. Why would love cause two people to become fugitives?
The answer is pretty simple - their people are at war with each other. Alana's planet of Landfall and its moon, Wreath (Marko's world) have been at war for a very long time. Instead of staying on their own planets, the soldiers of both Landfall and Wreath have moved their battles to other worlds in their galaxy, as a way to protect both of their planets. This has caused a divide in the galaxy, and with no end of the war in sight, sides have been chosen, and the battles continue.
Alana and Marko have to work incredibly hard to keep their government's freelancers off their tails, and still attempt to raise Hazel in a peaceful setting. While they manage to stay alive, their lives on the run have been anything but simple.
Brian K. Vaughan had done a magnificent job creating characters that the reader can empathize with from page 1. Alana and Marko are particularly strong characters, but I also really liked being introduced to the freelancers that are after them. I think that Vaughan has done an excellent job creating some extremely solid characters.
His writing is just fantastic. Panel after panel, and page after page, I was rooting for Alana and Marko, laughing, and hoping for the best for our lovestruck heroes.
Fiona Staples art brings to life Vaughan's excellent storytelling. The vivid colors just completely enhance this story, and with each panel, she just adds this wonderful depth to Vaughan's writing.
Together, it's pretty clear that they've crafted something truly awesome, and I can't wait to start Volume 2.
Very interesting, love the art style, Marko is a hottie, this world is uber interesting, and the fact it's so uncensored gives everything a more authentic and dire vibe. Enough so that I just had to buy up to volume 5 immediately after finishing this one!
In these first six issues we see Hazel’s birth, learn a back story for her parents romance and see her parent’s constantly fighting to keep her alive and free. We are introduced to some key players; Hazel and her parents Marko and Alana, Prince Robot IV, The Will and Lying Cat – all setting up for a truly epic long running comic series. I’M EXCITED. I only wished I hadn’t waited so long to get on board.
This comic series has action, humour, forbidden romance and a witty cross breed alien baby (Hazel) as the narrator. I would have to say it’s the best comic I have ever read – sorry Batman, sorry Batgirl, sorry Starfire, sorry Scooby Doo, sorry Xmen, sorry Green Arrow, sorry Outcast, sorry The Walking Dead. Ok so you really can’t compare most of those comics to one another, but you get my point.
This right here is an adult comic, and I’m not saying this because it’s got a few inter species sex scenes. Underneath the battle, the bloodshed and the humorous respite, this is a story of a mother and father battling the odds and the universe to give their little girl the best life possible.
I read Frank Miller’s Batman because I love bad boy heroes and vigilantes. I read Amanda Conner’s Starfire because she fricking adorable and orange. With Saga I had the action and fighting the good fight of Batman and Starfire, plus more. I connected with the characters. By the end I wasn’t just reading it for entertainment. I was reading it because I gave a shit about what happened to the world I had just entered.
I was enthralled from page one of issue one “Am I shitting? It feels like I’m shitting!” to the last page of issue six “And then my grandparents came to live with us”. I’m hooked – good thing I’ve already got the next four collections.
This was an excellent way to start my adventure into the world of comics and graphic novels. This was a very fast paced story about two lovers who are being hunted by people from the planets they come from. It is all told from the perspective of their child.
This comic was funny and adventurous. The illustrations and use of color was phenomenal! Loved it all.
I think I will need to invest in the deluxe editions for this comic series. The art work is too fantastic.
