The purpose of this book is to educate and empower teachers of physical education by introducing them to all the variables that can be adapted to ensure appropriate inclusion in physical education. This book is organized to provide the reader with the most up to date and useful strategies to include children with disabilities. It should help teachers make placement decisions based on each child's unique needs and the unit of instruction. The reader should also learn how to develop and implement a physical education IEP, introduce disability/ability awareness activities, train peer tutors, use support personnel and use homework in physical education. In addition, over 52 skill-related procedures for both quantitative and qualitative assessment purposes are provided across 38 units of instruction, each with potential adaptations specified. The adaptations highlighted fall into four categories: environmental adaptations, equipment adaptations, instructional adaptations and rule adaptations. The appendices provide an extensive amount of information that teachers can use to successfully include children with disabilities in general physical education.
