He was the founder of philosophical Taoism. Lao Tzu is also worshipped as a deity in religious Taoism and ancient Chinese religions which are observed as traditions. This legendary figure is generally dated to around the 6th century BC. He was believed to be a contemporary of Confucius. However, some historians have mentioned that Lao Tzu lived during the Warring States period, between fifth of fourth century BC. Lao Tzu stands as a central figure in Chinese culture. The emperors of both the Tang Dynasty and Modern people of the Li surname claim that Lao Tzu was a founder of their lineage.
