Stewart was at a point where he needed help. A normal household had a wife and mother to take control. He didn't have any of that. He had single handedly raised three children. The solution would be to hire a housekeeper. He was prepared to accept every term and condition. And he did. Running the household would no longer be a problem. The requests were a little odd though.
