The world’s best-loved art historian, Sister Wendy Beckett, takes us on a tour around six of her favourite US museums in this sumptuous new 288-page volume.

In this beautiful new book, Sister Wendy chooses some of her favourite pieces of art from six US museums of her choice. These are the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Kimbell Art Museum Fort Worth, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The pictures reproduced here show the breadth of Sister Wendy’s appreciation. Her selection is not limited by genre – she looks at some of the greatest classical paintings, by Velasquez, Goya, Rubens, Tiepolo or Renoir, but also at modern and more unusual artefacts and sculptures from all over the world, such as a page from the Koran, or a Chinese tombstone. The magnificent illustrations reproduce many details of the main pieces.

In her inimitable style, Sister Wendy writes a very personal response to the art, not necessarily from a religious point of view, but simply from that of a world-renowned art historian.

The book includes features boxes giving key facts about the artists in question.
