Reckoning is a prequel novella in the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I decided to read the prequel after I read the first book since I wanted to know how Bones (the male protagonist in the Night Huntress series) acted before he met Cat (the female protagonist in the series). Let’s say I’m glad I got to read his character in Halfway to the Grave before I read this novella. He did a complete 360 turn after he met Cat.
In this novella, he’s in New Orleans, and he’s focused on tracking down some serious ghoul serial killers. He’s not the light and fun bounty hunter vampire, but the dark and sad one that wants to complete his job and move on. (Don’t get me wrong, he’s dark in Halfway to the Grave, but he’s all ‘duty’ and no-fun in this novella.) He does meet a young lady in this book, but he’s using her to help him find the ghouls that keep wreaking havoc in NOLA. He’ll also have to deal with a red-headed vampire mercenary that is always in his way trying to kill him when he’s trying to find the killers.
This was a short novella that introduces readers to Bones world before he meets Cat in the first full-length novel in the Night Huntress series. I liked the prequel, but I didn’t love it. I loved knowing where Bones was before he went to Ohio and met the half-breed vampire, Cat, who turned his world upside-down. Bones is one sexy vampire that will be hard to forget if you read Halfway to the Grave.
I can’t wait to dive further into this series and can’t believe I waited this long to read it. What was I thinking?!
I give this novella 3.5-stars and recommend it to readers of the Urban Fantasy/PNR genres.
