Carol Corsa always looks forward to taking Mrs Townsend fruit picking, but one day the trip is very nearly ruined when an angry tractor crashed into her in a narrow country lane. Luckily, the only thing damaged is one of the baskets of fruit on her back seat, and the driver of the tractor is so kind and helpful that Carol even manages to forgive his spiteful vehicle. Later Carol is delighted to find herself being joined by a new friend, Mickey Morgan, and looks forwards to new adventures. Four stories complete this first volume, filling in details of Carol's and Mickey's life with their owners the Townsends, and describing some of their adventures. Many of the incidents are based on events in the author's own life, giving an authentic flavour to the stories. The setting in Worcestershire is realistic, too, being the area in which Claire Rosemary Jane grew up. Parents and children alike will be attracted to these stories, in which the cars have characters of their own and can talk to each other, though not to humans - an unusual slant on a familiar type of book. Like the Rev. Awdrey's tales, these are morally sound, though the points are unstressed.
