"Toward Active Living" is the third in a trilogy of publications resulting from the Second International Consensus Symposium and Conference on Physical Activity, Fitness and Health held in May 1992. In this book over 50 experts examine the relationship of physical activity and fitness to health. It aims to bridge the gap between high-level research in the physical activity sciences and its application to programs and practice. The book combines the perspectives of scientists, educators, practitioners, and policy makers. Written in non-technical language it includes 41 of the papers presented during the Active Living portion of the conference. It details scientific knowledge about the biological aspects of physical activity, examines scientific data available on the psychological outcomes and determinants of participation in physically active lifestyles, looks at the how and why of promoting active living in different populations and settings, proposes practical application of strategies to a wide variety of community situations and assesses the active living concepts and its potential impact on government poliicy and professional practice.
The book enables practitioners to apply research-based knowledge in the physical activity sciences to their day-to-day work and can thus be used by fitness instructors, health/fitness administrators, physical educators, students and policy makers.
