Mary Shelley (1797-1851) was an English novelist, best known for her novel Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. She also edited the works of her husband, the poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Mary Shelley employed the techniques of many different novelistic genres, most vividly the Godwinian novel, Walter Scott's new historical novel, and the Gothic novel. In the Last Man, an apocalyptic science fiction novel, the book tells of a future world that has been ravaged by a plague at the end of the 21st century.
