Set in contemporary Britain, "Under the Street Lamp on Romeo Terrace" is an outstanding story of love, guilt and sacrifice which is both tough and tender. Herbert lives on a council estate with his parents and has a job as a clerk in a leather works. Although his life may seem mundane, Herbert has poetry in his soul and love in his heart. He pursues Monica, the girl of his dreams, but this does not prevent him from getting into a disastrous fight and neglecting an alcoholic friend who is clearly dying. Consumed by guilt, Herbert decides that one of his friends is more worthy of Monica's affections - so he sacrifices his own happiness to bring them together. Michael Bailey convincingly portrays the dull lives of his young characters and transforms them into something riveting and special. His themes of love, friendship, death and violence are handled with humour and warmth. He also brilliantly captures the style, rhythm and vocabulary of everyday speech in this believable love story for today.
