Doctor Aphra is back for yet another round of mischief. I know I keep saying this, but I really do love her character. I hope she manages to continue popping up for a while yet, her stories have been some of the most fun ones yet.



Where the other two volumes of Aphra had been fun and flighty, this volume has a slightly heavier tone to it. It’s still a fantastic read, but there’s some dark implications happening. On the bright side they stop dancing around the most obvious secret ever and let Aphra finally be herself, in the most adorable fashion ever.
I’ve always loved Aphra’s character. She’s fun in a ‘devil may care’ sort of way. Sure she’ll set events in motion that could make people hurt, and she may sometimes even get people killed, but she was still oddly upbeat and optimistic despite that. You could argue that it was because she didn’t let herself think about it too much, and you’d probably be right.
This volume did it’s very best to shake that part of Aphra. In this volume she found the tables turned, with a certain character putting her again and again in situations that would force her to choose who lived and who died. The intent was clearly to prove that she’ll always choose herself as the one to survive any given situation.
Still, there were some fun and happy moments in this volume, as hard as that may be to believe. There’s a really cute and sweet romantic subplot here. Sure, there are some hidden motives and intentions here…but it was still really endearing. Plus it’s nice that they stopped hinting at Aphra’s sexuality and just went with it. That was a refreshing change of pace. Also, I totally ship the love/hate relationship that was forming here. I hope we see it continue in later volumes.
There was an absolutely amazing cameo for this volume as well. The cameo won’t be of any real surprise to you if you’ve been keeping an eye on the single issue covers (like I have) but it was still really really exciting for me. The character that appeared is one of my absolute favorites from Rebels, so it was nice to see her again, even if she wasn’t exactly on the same side as Aphra. But then again, who is?
On the whole I was really happy with this volume. It gave off a range of emotions; from the moments that made me cringe, two worry and gasp, down to the moments that made me giggle, smile, or cheer. I’d call that in itself a major success. Can’t wait to see how Aphra gets out of the new mess she’s in!
