MARTHA STEPHENS grew up in Waycross, Georgia, and her fiction has been set mostly among working class people in south Georgia. She lives today in Cincinnati, Ohio. Stephens' first novel, Cast a Wistful Eye (Macmillan) concerns a young couple and the birth of their first child. Her novel Children of the World (SMU Press) is based on the lives of her parents. The short stories of Women and Men and the Spaces in Between are studies of marriage and family life. In one story a woman who has lost her husband goes to work for a lonely attorney in an old-fashioned law office; on a certain day something strange happens there that makes each of them realize their need for the other -- and for an end to loneliness. Martha Stephens is also the writer of a memoir about victims of a medical tragedy -- The Treatment: the Stories of Those Who Died in the Cincinnati Radiation Tests (Duke University Press, 2002).
