In this low fantasy novel, Maran the dwarf is a cook by training and heritage. She travels to Jura City to find work, only to find herself in more trouble than work. If she could get a straight answer about anything, she might be able to figure out what is going on, but between an abstract scholar and a street poet as allies, Maran is hard pressed in just understanding what anyone is saying, let alone knowing what their agendas are. In the end, she may need to work for the Ironmongers, her people's enemies, who are the most dangerous dwarves of all.
