When a screenwriter needs someone to be his "Jesus coach" on a project commissioned by a mega-church studio, like any good Angeleno, he turns to his barista for advice. Though our narrator has no writing ambitions of his own, as a recovering fundamentalist, he is well-armed to help out. Halfway through writing the script, though, the evening news starts to eerily mirror his wild fantasies. He finds himself running scared through a surreal and sunny demimonde, while the principalities and powers of the entertainment world battle each other from boardroom to back alley. Like Umberto Eco's FOUCAULT'S PENDULUM or Thomas Pynchon's THE CRYING OF LOT 49, THE MAN COMES AROUND combines screwball slapstick, surreal depravity, and comic noir in an irreverent satire of those who eagerly hope the horrors of the Book of Revelations become tomorrow's trending topic-and the entertainment industry that panders to their fantasies of eschatological revenge.
