En siete breves capítulos, el autor (físico teórico que trabaja en QLG, gravedad cuántica, la rival/alternativa a las supercuerdas) nos hace una breve introducción a la física. A toda ella, así desde arriba a vista de pájaro. El capítulo 1 habla de la Relatividad Especial y General de Einstein y de cómo la gran idea de Einstein fue pensar que el espacio mismo hacía moverse a las cosas en vez de una fuerza que se propagaba por el espacio. El segundo capítulo habla de la física cuántica, la física de lo muy pequeño, y de cómo la idea de Planck de suponer que la energía no puede tomar cualquier valor sino que va en paquetes (cuantos) resolvía de repente un montón de problemas con observaciones inexplicadas. Y cómo esa suposición fue ampliada por Einstein y por otros (Heisenberg, Bohr, Schrödinger) hasta llegar a la teoría más precisa que hoy conocemos, capaz de hacer predicciones sobre el valor de constantes que luego el experimento corrobora hasta el decimal número 11.
El capítulo 3 narra cómo hemos pasado de pensar que todo el Universo giraba en torno a a la Tierra a darnos cuenta de que somos una mota de polvo en el Espacio, y reintroduce la RG de Einstein para contarnos cómo hemos llegado a saber que el Universo se expande.
El capítulo 4 nos cuenta el modelo estándar de partículas (que parece un zoo de partículas, pero que en realidad no tiene tantas), con el que podemos explicar casi todo lo que observamos (menos la gravedad, que no se puede/sabe incluir en este modelo).
Ahí lo retoma el capítulo 5, que nos habla de que las dos grandes teorías que tenemos, la de lo muy grande (relatividad general) y la de lo muy pequeño (mecánica cuántica) no pueden ser verdad a la vez. Aprovecha para presentarnos la gravedad cuántica y de los intentos que están haciéndose hoy en día para encontrar un marco teórico que replique la RG a grandes escalas y la MC a pequeñas. En la gravedad cuántica el propio Espacio y el propio Tiempo son cuánticos, son trozos relacionados unos con otros, y la percepción del "paso" del tiempo solo es una ilusión macroscópica que no tiene correlato microscópico. Este capítulo da para echarse unas pensadas.
El capítulo 6 habla de la termodinámica y de cómo todos aquellos procesos que parecen reversibles en el tiempo (los planetas girando alrededor del Sol, por ejemplo) no implican transferencia de calor, mientras que otros que claramente tienen una dirección definida (un plato rompiéndose al caer al suelo, un café enfriándose en una habitación) sí la tienen. El autor reflexiona sobre cómo esta transferencia de calor, estudiada por la termodinámica, puede ayudar a explicar la flecha del tiempo, la dirección en la que suceden las cosas. Capítulo interesantísimo y complejo.
En el último capítulo el autor reflexiona sobre cómo podemos explicar la consciencia. En este capítulo se le ve más fuera de su campo, cita a unos doce filósofos clásicos y dice cosas menos interesantes que en los anteriores. Aun así no estropea el libro.
En resumen, una lectura breve pero muy enjundiosa. Absolutamente recomendable.

This great little book probably took me longer to read than it should have, as I ended up rereading parts of it to make sure I understood what was being said. Physics was one of my favourite subjects in school and I almost ended up studying it at university, but then my life took a different direction. I left school in 1983, so over the years my knowledge of physics has faded. This book helped rekindle a little of that interest that I used to have in physics, which probably isn't a bad thing.

This book covers some of the basics of and recent breakthroughs in physics in seven simple short chapters. It is written in an enjoyable and engaging way, in terms that anyone can understand, without simplifying things too much. It is very accessible and was an enjoyable read. i'm not sure if it has rekindled my interest enough to pick up some longer and more in-depth volumes on physics, but I can see myself at least rereading at some point.

Concise, charming, covers a pretty wide range for such a brief little overview. I like reading something in print about physics that’s so up-to-date it mentions 2014. Beautiful book jacket design.
