The work of Cornford & cross has often emerged from living and working in cities. More recently, their interest in urban patterns of social, political and economic organization has broadened to include engagement with power structures further afield. They often maintain that as well as producing aesthetic experiences, a key function of contemporary art in an open society is to test concepts, assumptions and boundaries. This book brings together for the first time the full range of encounters, actions and debates that make up their practice, and includes critical essays by John Roberts and Rachel Withers. Conford and Cross have carried out a number of significant context-specific projects across the UK and internationally. Their work has been exhibited in London galleries including the ICA, the Photographers' Gallery and the South London Gallery, as well as in New York, Philadelphia, Rome and San Francisco.
