This book examines industrial training structures and processes in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands with detailed research on three sectors: engineering, hotel and catering and textiles. It sets industrial training against wider developments in vocational training, specifically youth training, in all three countries, and examines the impact of these initiatives on traditional structures and processes of industrial training. In the UK this policy area is characterized by centralization and lack of consensus between participants, despite agreement that skills training is inadequate compared to our international competitors. Drawing on comparisons with the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland, the book concludes that political parties, employer and employee organizations, and educationalists need to reassess their attitudes to training and develop a new approach based on consensus and co-operation.
