Peterstown is the name of a Georgian house, property of the Peters family since it was built. John Peters lives there. His wife was killed by a fall from a horse. John and his sister live there, along with those of the family still at home. The eldest daughter is beautiful and the main female character in the book. Two years younger is Sarah, who is pretty and attractive. Both are popular, but old John is strict.
Tony is drop dead handsome, with beautiful manners and no money. He acquires what he needs in unspecified ways and feels that the quickest way is to marry Drusilla. He goes uninvited to a party, where he chats up Sarah, mistaking her for the heiress. Discovering his mistake, he drops her and concentrates on Drusilla, who falls in love with him. She eventually agrees to marry him.
