Famed mountain man Barnaby Syke and his two wives, Victoria of the Crow and Mary of the Shoshone, lead a party of tubercular young people to the South Western desert. The ailing travellers hope to find a cure in the warm, dry climate near the Virgin River. Syke and his wives must safely lead their charges across Utah at a time of heightened tension between the federal government and the Latter-day Saints. Syke soon discovers that other wagon companies on the trail fear the sick and blame them for every ill event along the route.
