From the mid sixteenth century to the present day this book attempts to chronicle the plight of the British pub landlord. They have constantly fought with brewers, temperance groups, and changing drinking trends, and it is quickly realised the job has been far from easy. Along the way we pick up Ron Jones, an ordinary working class lad who went into the pub game quite unexpectedly and quite green. From a gritty mining community, his background gave him a strong sense of right and wrong, and a desire to live, trade and harmonise with everyone despite colour, creed or class. He entered the licensed trade at a time when it was about to undergo the biggest upheaval in its long troubled history. Quite by accident Ron rose from the lowly ranks of a local LVA President, stepped up to Regional President and was then catapulted to the dizzy heights of National LVA President. Once in that position he fought on a daily basis with anyone who threatened the livelihood of a pub landlord or the British pub tradition. Despite the odds stacked against him on many occasions he nevertheless won some well earned victories earning him massive publicity and praise amongst his fellow licensees.
