Tom Willoughby's Scouts: A Story of the War in German East Africa by Herbert Strang. The author use the pseudonym of two English authors, George Herbert Ely (1866-1958) and Charles James L'Estrange (1867-1947). They specialized in writing adventure stories for boys. Among the passengers who boarded the Hedwig von Wissmann at Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika, one June day in 1914, there were two who engaged more particularly the attention of those already on deck. The first was a tall stalwart man of some fifty years, with hard blue eyes, full red cheeks, a square chin, and a heavy blond moustache streaked with grey. He stepped somewhat jerkily up the gangway, brought his hand stiffly to his brow in response to the salute of the first officer, and was led by that deferential functionary to a chair beneath the deck awning.
