A requirement of the 1993 Education Act states that the governors should consider grant-maintained status on an annual basis. This text aims to explain to governors, heads, teachers and parents, the benefits of grant-maintained status. It analyzes and provides a critique of the Government's policy, looks at the current situation - in particular, the emerging bureaucracy of the Funding Agency for Schools - and makes some proposals for the future of grant-maintained schools.
