George Gillespie is a child at the start of the 20th century and finds himself in love and embroiled in the Great War. He endures the loss of his brothers, he is jilted, and falls in love again, only to lose once more.
He returns to Australia to live the life of a horseman again, survives the hard times of the Great Depression and, once more, finds himself at war. Finally, he and his former fiancee find solace and comfort in each other.
This is a story of the futility of war, of the fragility of the human heart, and the horses who are the real heroes of the story.
