In the Last Sunrise we follow the life and adventures of Jack Hawkins, the illegitimate son of a Royal Marine Corporal who took advantage of the innocence of a young working-girl. Young Jack and his mother are forced by circumstances to move from their home in Portsmouth and seek a living elsewhere. His mother becomes housekeeper to a vicar who, though kindly, is a very strange man indeed. Fate takes a hand and they move to another parish and look after another man of the cloth, who offers Jack's mother marriage. They then move to Australia and a totally new life where Jack grows into a fine young man. After a stint working on a sheep farm, Jack joins the West Australian Army as a Mounted Infantryman. At the outbreak of the Boer War he is sent to South Africa, where the great adventure begins.
