My One True Kidnap victim…

Why is it always so much more disappointing when what you wished for is granted…and not all it’s cracked up to be? In My One True Highlander we meet Marjorie, the Duke of Lattimer’s sister. Now Marjorie hasn’t been a duke’s sister for long. Well, she’s always been Gabriel’s sister, but Gabriel hasn’t been a duke for long. What she thought would be an escape from a life as a well-educated Lady’s Companion to a life as a successful lady herself, hasn’t turned out well. The Ton snubbed her and her former friends were uncomfortable with her new position in society. She’s not accepted or wanted anywhere in London. With Gabriel so far away on his estate in the Highlands, she’s struggling with her loneliness.

When Marjorie receives mail from her brother who announces he’s getting married in the Highlands, she sees this as a great way to escape from London. With her companion, Mrs Giswell, and a couple of drivers, they set off to surprise the Duke and his fiancé.

Marjorie’s plans go haywire when she’s kidnapped only 6 hours away from her destination. Her first thoughts are that she is going to be held for ransom, but when she meets her captors, she realises it’s a little more than the money they’re after.

Graeme can’t believe his brothers have kidnapped a Lady. As if he doesn’t have enough on his plate? With looking after his siblings and the people on his land, the Laird can’t even find the time or coin for a hair cut. She’s a bonny lass, but that won’t help him when Lattimer attacks his home looking for his sister. Or, for that matter, the Dunncraigh who wants her as a weapon against Lattimer. Graeme does not want to be in the middle of a clan feud. He needs to spin this so that everyone will stay safe, and if could gain a bit from it, well, who’s he to complain.

In the end, I enjoyed My One True Highlander but up until the 30% mark, I was ready to give up. It was bloody BORING!! It just took too long for her shackles to be removed and for the story to change from a warden and prisoner story to a love story with loyalty, intrigue and passion. Eventually, the characters grew and with some inner-reflection, Marjorie realises that love is better than a ballroom and Graeme realises that love won’t ruin him.

I finished the story with a smile on my face. Graeme's brother Connell was a sweetheart. I also loved the budding relationship between the Blacksmith and Mrs Giswell. But, I can’t forget that first 30%, so it wasn’t a complete win for me.
