The latest picture book from Britain's favourite children's author and illustrator, Raymond Briggs. One morning, ten-year-old John wakes up to find an invisible giant sitting on the end of his bed. The giant is mischevious and teases him, refusing to be measured, and playing tricks. But it can be helpful too: it does the vacuuming, carries bags downstairs and does the washing up. To begin with, the giant plays tricks on all John's family, whizzing the washing line round, spraying the neighbours with a hose pipe, even stealing the cherries from the trifle in front of Auntie Barbara. But really, the giant wants to be normal, so John agrees to take it out to play with him and to school. This is when the fun really starts, and like most of Brigg's characters it proves to be very subversive when it comes to authority In the end, life becomes impossible and John asks the creature to leave. It may still be a child - suppose it grows even bigger? John tries to say goodbye but he doesn't know the creature's name. An invisible hand holds a crayon and writes in childish letter and the invisible playmate's identity is at last revealed...
