Children are at the heart of a number of popular debates in North America and Europe about the future of public space. On the one hand, the 1990s has witnessed increased popular anxiety about children's vulnerability to stranger-danger, promoting a concern that young children are being squeezed out of public space. On the other hand, this period has been marked by a rising tide of adult fear about the anarchy and uncontrollability of urban youth. This book addresses these debates about the role of children and young people in public space. The chapters explore imagined childhoods, "terror talk", geographies of risk, the retreat of children from the street, the street as a space contested by adults and teenagers, and how adults and children negotiate children's use of space. The book concludes by promoting radical interventions in public policy.
