This comprehensive reference book, documents the considerable amount of art-inspired music found on commercial and other mass-produced audio recordings published through 1999. Recording formats included in this survey are long-playing phonograph records (33 1/3 RPM), cassette tapes (7 1/2 IPS), and compact discs. Detailed information is provided to aid in purchasing the recordings or accessing them in library and archive collections. For the purposes of this compilation, "art" is interpreted broadly to include the full range of visual media and all aspects of artist's lives and works. Music has been gathered from classical, jazz, and popular styles, including examples partly inspired by art, music dedicated to artists, works related to incidental writings by artists, compositions inspired by texts about art, and pieces taking their inspiration from artistic movements, genres, museums, or collections. The data is organized into three sections. The first, an alphabetical listing of visual artists, follows each name with relevant composers in alphabetical order, details of their compositions, and a maximum of five recordings each.
The second section lists selected miscellaneous and un-attributed works of architecture, glass, mosaic, paintings/prints, sculpture and unclassified media. Finally, an index of composers provides an additional means of locating citations.
