Do you know those books that pull you in, hook you, and, as soon as you’re finished, you need to pick up the next book in the series? Frostbite was exactly that kind of book. The love triangle (square/rectangle/trapezoid/diamond?) didn’t even bother me that much. It’s like a journey. Also, shut up. NO comments about that, please. I’m trying to be open minded. Also, Rose is learning. She is learning. It’s important to learn. Also, it’s a complicated thing, and sometimes I feel as confused as Rose. I’m choosing to believe this is the sign of a wonderful author.
I think one of aspects of this book that astounds me (in a good way) and that pulled me in so much was Rose’s journey as a character. She’s growing. It’s a painful and awful process (isn’t growing always difficult in some way?) but she is a fighter. And Rose grew a lot in this book. There were also some points raised that will probably be addressed in later books, and at this point I’m enthralled enough with Rose and what happens to her that I want to pick up the next book as soon as I finish this review. I like Rose. I think she is really stupid sometimes and makes impulsive decisions, but I want her to succeed. Team Rose!
The world is also fascinating. And things are HAPPENING. (Side note: do you realize I say this a lot about books? I think it’s my way of saying the plot was very entertaining without giving anything away.) The bad guys are getting baddier. The possibilities for getting killed are starting to add up. And I like where things are going because I don’t really know where things are going, other than getting bleaker. But the humor in this book also has me giggling, and that is a nice balance to the bleakness.
Love LOVE when a second installment is as good or better than the first, and Frostbite is definitely that. I look forward to the third book!

I loved Vampire Academy, but I wish there had been something more. Frostbite definitely make up for that while it makes you appreciate how much information was given in Vampire Academy and how much didn't happen. There is so much more action, drama, and suspense. It sucks you in from the very beginning and you find yourself not wanting to put it down. Especially since there are so many times where you are kept on the edge of your seat.
Vampire Academy took place mostly at St. Vladimir Academy, but Frostbite takes you outside of that. It's so cool to see the vampires outside of their usual environment since they aren't allowed to leave their school, as well as seeing them interact with quite a few characters that are introduced.
With Rose's mom coming to the school, you get more a back story on Rose. She mentioned her mom some in Vampire Academy, but seeing her with her mom and how they really don't have much of a relationship at all and might as well be strangers. You kind of feel bad for Rose because her mother comes in acting like she can treat Rose like a child and it bothers Rose since her mother never tried to be her mom, so why does she have the right to treat her the way she does.
Rose still has the moments where you love her, but other times where you just want to smack her. In her defense though, she really deals with a lot and all that would wear on anyone. She is dealing with her feelings for Dimitri, the stuff with her mom, keeping Lissa safe, dealing with the stress of Strigoi attacks, plus the annoy new guy, Adrian, almost harassing her, and trying to deal with the fact that one of her friends loves her but she can't return those feelings.
The bond between Rose and Lissa is explained so much more, and you find out why it happened, which is really cool. And to see how Lissa learns more about the things she can do, and the things she could learn to do.
While I did like Adrian a bit, he is no Dimitri. Rose and Dimitri sometimes act like an old married couple and they're way to cute and you can feel all the sexual tension between them. Adrian, is more the guy who likes the chase. He knew from the beginning that Rose wasn't into him, but he pushed and would send her gifts and things.
You learn about the Strigoi in Vampire Academy, but in Frostbite, you get to see them first hand. You feel the same fear that Rose is feeling and you keep wanting to yell at her. The anticipation was so much and you just get lost in reading because once you think things are going their way, something else happens.
While there was so much action in the end, there was also times that made you just want to cry right along with Rose. You are in shock just as much as she is and you can't believe that it all really happened. You are left again wanting more. You want to know how this is going to affect the characters and the story and where it will go from there.

Lissa doesn't seem so needy in this one and I'm sort of feeling the Dimitri/Rose thing but it's still got a bit to go before I'm sucked in completely. Almost there though....

If you wanted to compare books, there is a lot less of Lissa in this novel, and a lot less intrigue throughout the first part of the novel. This is not a bad thing though. Sometimes, when reading the first book in a series, it’s obvious it’s a first book; it’s setting up the plot for future stories, it introduces characters and mythology, it gives you enough to whet your appetite, but isn’t exactly a complete story. Vampire Academy wasn’t like that, it was it’s own full story, with it’s own plotline, and it was incredible – but after reading Frostbite, you can see how it could work like an obvious first story, as we know all of the above, and now we have, in Frostbite, what I would say is Rose’s story.
As I said, there was less intrigue; there was the worrying about Lissa’s powers and who was after her in the first novel, but in Frostbite, the danger isn’t necessarily on anyone specific, it’s just there. We focus a lot more on Rose’s relationship with her mother, her feelings towards the guys in her life, the gorgeous Dimitri and the lovely Mason, and some issues with herself about whether she’s changed or not. It’s a brilliant insight into Rose, where as the first book was more focused on her wanting to protect Lissa. It was great to see more of this Rose, vulnerable Rose, and to see her grow.
Yes, there is less Lissa as I said, but there is more of some other characters that we have come to love – or love to hate – like Christian, Mason, and Mia. And, well, wow! I can’t really go into it without spoiling the story, but these three, along with Rose... seriously, you won’t believe what you’re reading, but it does make sense. Frostbite is quite a sad book, I was close to tears at one point, but it’s amazing the strength people can show when things get really bad. I really was completely wowed. And the action! Bloody brilliant! Don’t you just love it when you can’t see a way out of a bad situation, and an author chucks in something that completely blows you away? Simply amazing, but extremely powerful.
As well as more of old characters, we meet some new ones too, namely Janine, Rose’s mum, Tasha, Christian’s aunt, and Adrian, a royal Moroi also holidaying in Idaho. And I love them all, I think. At times, you dislike them all for whatever reasons, I won’t spoil it for you, but I loved seeing Janine, and understanding Rose’s feelings towards her and seeing her work through it. Tasha is also pretty damn lovely lady, and a bit of a revolutionary, and Adrian... well, he’s just sexy and charming, and too bloody arrogant. I’m slightly on the fence when it comes to him, I’m not sure what his game is, but... I like him, I think. My instincts say to be wary, but don’t write him off completely. So we’ll see. I look forward to seeing more of them all in future!
Frostbite is quite a hard book to read emotionally, there’s a lot more danger and more... reality of the world these characters live in, and it’s not pretty. But it’s such a fantastic read. And of course, there’s a fair amount of the amazing Dimitri to make things a little brighter. Such an amazing book, really, you have to read it! I am so looking forward to reading Shadow Kissed, the third book in the series! I just know it’s going to be amazing. And I seriously need to start on Mead’s adult series. Seriously, new favourite author right here.
