"I have not, I admit, behaved with much decency or common sense. I have devoured graniya resin not once, but three times, and suffered the consequences. I was on the bridge at Sharvica and watched as the flesh of almost five hundred Doms and Knights was burned by mage fire and Elementals. I have tasted the blood of the Te'arc and allowed his magic to consume me. Perhaps worst of all, I have taken Ana'anzekla into my body and become their creature. But I have done some good, too. I have gentled a Saffecq and won her loyalty. I have been Chosen, above all others, by a Guardian who has dedicated herself to protecting me with her life. I was instrumental in finding an Imp to save the life of an Enchanter. I have even come into possession of the most bad-tempered, irritable, demanding, foul-mouthed messenger phaerie in all of Anambarand, and learned to cherish him. In my defence, I can only say that I have always tried to do the right thing. No doubt my critics would argue that I always chose the course that was most advantageous for me and for my House, but that is not strictly true. Well, perhaps it was so in the beginning.
Later, as I learned many hard lessons, I would like to think that I became more decent. More thoughtful. More human. I only ask that, as you read, you bear in mind that every word is true. I swear this on my honour as Leon, Dom of Blood House Clemeny."
