Tip - Don't eat seafood in the middle of the desert
Waking up in Vegas with no memory…Oh Geez, I’m reading one of those books…AGAIN. Nooooo!!
Thankfully, I was wrong. In the first couple of chapters I was thinking – this author has put her blood sweat and tears into this…I must force myself to read on. Then, things sort of changed. I started grinning, groaning and blushing. What I thought was going to be a humdrum - What Happens in Vegas… ended up being so much more. I was busting a gut laughing with each new memory hitting the couple. I was a wee bit turned on with the steam that is produced with a little alcohol and a lot of suppressed emotions. Our main characters start their story not particularly liking each other, but as things moved along, we get to know them and their history.
Julia is a successful romance writer scheduled to attend a readers and writers conference in Vegas. With a few commitments here and there, she is really looking forward to catching up with her kooky agent Meredith, and best mate and fellow romance author, Shanna. Julia has just signed divorce papers and is ready to let her hair down and party a little. She runs into a man (literally) and then finds herself in his company and having a few drinks with him and his mates. This man (who she ran into) has a stick firmly placed where the sun doesn't shine. He is arrogant, rude and condescending. Julia doesn’t want to spend any more time than is necessary, within his company.
Nate is a divorce lawyer, the most unromantic profession in the world. With his negatives experiences stemming from his career and having lived through a nasty break up with a girlfriend who found her one true love…in someone else, I don't blame him. It broke something in him and he turned into a working robot. No emotions and cutting comments guarantee that people don’t get too close to him. Then…this woman crashes into his world and she’s romantic, fun-loving and smiles. THE HORROR!!!
At first, I struggled with the way this book was written. It’s one of those. You jump back and forth in time, putting together a puzzle. The puzzle is - WTF did I do last night? In this case, we are finding out what happened to Nate and Julia as their memories resurface. Those memories are at times hilarious and at times cringe-worthy. Who would want to find out that you may…or not, have stripped off your clothes in public? How would you feel if complete strangers asked, with a smirk on their lips, whether you remembered so and so? Did they fubar to the 100th degree by finding Elvis in a little chapel?
Honestly, this book had parts that were expected when we visit Vegas and memories are missing, but there was a lot more to it. Both Julia and Nate have scars but deep down want a love that is special and complete. Luckily we aren’t forced to believe that a two-day relationship leads to a happy ever after, but we are left with the possibility that they can make it to the end. There are scenes set in the romance convention that is familiar and real to our community and the author has got it right. We aren’t all cookie cutter readers. Romance readers are doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, and housewives. Some of us like to step back in time, some of us like to move forward in time. Some like the kink while others like a mystery. What other genre can satisfy us all? We, the romance readers, know the reality of life…but we also like stepping out of reality and finding escape in loving love.
By the way, it was Julia and Nate's poor friends who learnt the valuable lesson about seafood in the desert.
