This study examines events in a single factory in Tamilnadu, India, over a 30-year period. It focuses on the limitations of conventional managerial and trade union strategies that surfaced thereby, and the advantages of 'strategic management' methods - i.e. human resource management, and the options that this can offer industrial relations policy-makers.
