This book introduces geophysics in its strictest sense, as a study of physics of the solid earth. Although geophysics covers an enormous area of work, it is possible to draw together a large number of common methods and principles employed using illustrative examples from a diverse range of applications from global to environmental physics. The book begins by setting the geological scene of study. It then moves on to the extensive tools the physicist must employ to approach the physical environment - such as times series analysis, modelling and inversion, seismic and magnetic measurement, electromagnetic, and radioactive methods. In the third and final part of the book, the common applications are introduced, such as plate tectonics, geophysical measurement, mapping and prospecting, engineering and environmental applications. The emphasis throughout is on a broad and integrated approach to providing a grounding in geophysics.
