"I mean, it's true I'm a liar, and that, yeah, I'm fairly boy crazy - a pretty much deadly combination."(Katie Ellison)
After reading The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare, I wanted something contemporary, funny and from the chick-lit genre. That's when I decided to re-read Tommy Sullivan is a Freak. I loved this book in 7th grade and I wanted to see whether I still loved it 4 years later.
For some reason, the details and plot of this book was something that I clearly remembered, so I won't be able to comment on this. I knew exactly what I was getting myself into when I started this book. I won't lie, (see what I did there) this book has problems, but because I knew what the problems were before hand, they didn't really bother me.
There is something about Meg Cabot's writing style that I love. Meg Cabot's writing style is like reading a conversation and is hilarious and dramatic. It's the writing style that I'm absolutely sure would make me laugh on any dreary day!
Katie Ellison is the main character and the narrator of Tommy Sullivan is a Freak. Katie has it all. She is popular, smart, has a boyfriend who plays on the popular Quahog football team and never gets into trouble. But Katie is a compulsive liar and is also obsessed with boys. Even although Katie annoyed me in the beginning of the book with her back-and-forth decisions and emotions and the fact that she repeatedly said that Tommy was HOT, she knew that she was two-timing cheater and a liar and I couldn't help but root for her. Katie really did develop as a character.
Problems start in Katie's perfect life when Tommy Sullivan comes back into town. Tommy Sullivan is the guy who got chased out of town 4 years ago and is Katie's ex-best friend. The reason for Tommy's reappearance is one of the "mysteries" in this book. I loved Tommy! He has a weird sense of humour, takes things in stride and lets nothing get to him.
Since Katie and Tommy know each other quite well, naturally, a romance develops between the two of them, but I refuse to divulge whether this romance ends happily I will divulge. It does!. I liked Katie and Tommy as a couple. Even although they aren't one of my OTP's that I can't stop thinking about, they did grow on me as characters and a couple (even although I might forget them when I read about other perfect characters and couples). However, Katie and Tommy rarely talk. All they really do is make out. Katie can't stop telling us how HOT Tommy is and it just got on my nerves. I know that Tommy is hot. You told me that already, Katie. I don't have to be told about this 500 times.
Katie is also cheating on her boyfriend. This isn't a spoiler - I learnt about it in the first chapter. Even although two-timing cheating characters are one of my pet peeves, I didn't mind it in this book. I knew from the get-go that this book was going to have cheating in it, Katie knows that she's a cheater and I kind of bought into the justification from Cabot providing Katie's reasons for cheating. It also provided much of the humour in this book especially when Tommy makes references to it.
"Of course, I do think you might want to ask yourself why it is that you can't seem to be satisfied with just one guy. Or even with two, if all that hair twirling and looking up at me from underneath your eyelashes means what I think it means." (Tommy Sullivan to Katie Ellison)
Most of the characters in this book aside from Tommy and Katie are extremely stereotypical. There's the popular queen bee, Sidney, the dumb jock boyfriend, Seth, the goth girl, Jenna and the egotistical actor, Eric. However, even although these characters are quite stereotypical there were moments that I enjoyed. One of these moments was the strong friendship between Sidney and Katie that was anything but stereotypical.
I enjoyed this re-read. This book was humorous, light-hearted, fun and exactly what I needed!
