Jane Chatham, a well-bred young woman, gives dancing lessons to the widowed Lady Haywood's daughter and her friends. When during one of the sessions Jane trips in front of everyone and ends up on her behind, it becomes a much discussed incident in all the caricatures and gossip pages. Suddenly, Lady Haywood's salon is a huge success. Simon Atwood, Lord Granger, is a former agent for His Majesty, but after his capture and imprisonment in France, he's been reclusive until his friend asks him to look into the mysterious goings-on at Lady Haywood's salon. Simon hires Jane to tell him if she sees anything.
