Comprising three strands ("Story Street", "Genre Range" and "Info Trail") "Literacy Land" was written to match the genre and text types specified by the NLS and contains both fiction and non-fiction. This whole-class teaching anthology is designed for shared reading. Featuring the "Story Street" characters, "Genre Range" presents a captivating range of genres to expand pupils' reading experiences - plays, letters and diaries, comics, traditional tales and poetry. The texts are written or selected to match the reading ability of infants and there is clear progression in both language level and conceptual difficulty. They are designed to provide a strong basis for children's own writing across different genres and are suitable for use alongside any literary resources. The letters and diaries are a variety of personal communications providing examples of writing which are very close to children's immediate experiences and are ideal models for their own writing development. A selection of serious and comic plays provide opportunities for group readings and performance, with the appropriate number of characters for group work.
The plays develop the characters and situations in "Story Street". In the poetry books, children are introduced to different poetic forms through rhymes, songs, riddles, tongue twisters, humorous verse and story poems, among others. The comics, which feature the animals from "Story Street", are ideal for developing visual literacy and for reinforcing children's grasp of basic plot structures through a format that children love. The traditional tales are well-loved fairy tales, folk tales and fables re-told in a straightforward way at a very simple level.
