"Caribbean Home Economics" has been designed to equip students with all the essential skills needed for successful home making. The three course books are each divided into a series of sections which consider the following basic topics: the family, food and nutrition, textiles and clothing, consumer education, entertaining. The complete course covers all the requirements of the CXC Home Economics syllabus. Within each section, various aspects of the topic are explored with the help of photographs and drawings. The emphasis throughout the course is on student participation; a wide variety of recipes, many using local produce, is included; and suggestions for "things to do" both in the classroom and at home appear at regular intervals. Each book builds on and extends the work covered in the previous volume. At the end of the 3rd book, material for CXC examination practice is also provided. This 1st of three course books on Caribbean home economics provides a basic introduction to the concept of home economics. The importance of good health is stressed, with particular emphasis on the need for a balanced diet.
Six main food groups are identified and the properties and functions of each examined; students are then taught how to plan simple daily menus for their families within the constraints of time, money and equipment available. Basic sewing equipment and stitches, the care of clothing, and characteristics and uses of various types of fabrics are also covered.
