She’s all that and a big brain too.

Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m a big fan of Lady Claire Is All That. I found the characters shallow and very self-absorbed. The hero is a good-looking, privileged man who has been able to live a relatively easy life. His two main focuses in life up until now have been sports and women. The heroine has lived her life in America with her family but has just moved to London when her brother inherits a dukedom. Her main focus in life is maths and numbers. The two of them live their lives in their own little bubbles.
Lord Fox has been jilted and his male pride a little bruised. To prove he is all man and still someone to be admired, he accepts a wager by a “friend” to make an American intellect who wears glasses into the belle of the ball. He meets Lady Claire and expects the job to be easy. A smile here…a little flirting there…she’ll be so charmed that he’ll be having her follow his lead in no time.
Think again Lord Fox…think again.
Lady Claire has plans for her big brain. Now that she is in London Lady Claire hopes to get the opportunity to use her amazing mathematical abilities. Unfortunately, her aunt, the Duchess, has other plans. Ladies do not show their intelligence. Her aunt wants Claire and her sisters married off to well-established families in London and push the girls to act more ladylike. Claire is not looking for a husband and talks maths as much as possible to scare off eligible bachelors. If only Lord Fox would take the hint. It seems that talking maths is not enough to deter him.
Lady Claire and Lord Fox spend quite a lot of time together and start to enjoy each others company. The wager is still in place but Lord Fox is coming to regret his hasty decision. Lady Claire thought she should be with an intelligent man, not a man who prefers to play a sport instead of using his brain. Lord Fox thought that he should be with a woman with similar interests. Neither are sure they are meant for each but can’t deny their attraction.
The storyline for Lady Claire Is All That appealed to me. At times, I liked the characters but more times than not Lady Claire going on and on about her big brain drove me crazy. It wasn’t much better with Lord Fox being so consumed with his good looks and ability to win everything he plays at. The author repeats it often and dedicates paragraphs and paragraphs to the same topic each chapter. I got it the first 5 times.
I did enjoy parts of the story and loved how it ended. My enjoyment would have increased if the characters weren’t so self-absorbed through most of the book. I have not read the first two books in this series and to be honest, I don’t plan to go back and check them out.
Not every author can be your perfect match. Maya Rodale is a well-known romance author with a backlog that proves her success. To each, his own and all that jazz, don't judge this book on my opinion alone. Take the time to read what other's say, and you may find Lady Claire Is All That appeals to your mind, appeals to your senses and works perfectly for you.

Lord Fox is a man used to winning at everything, yet his academic skills are seriously lacking. His constant rival, Mowbray, is tired of Fox always lording over everything and makes a wager to keep him distracted long enough to win something for himself. Mowbray wagers his prized race horse against something Fox will fight to keep above all cost. The bet? Fox has until the Cavendish Ball to make Lady Claire Cavendish popular. Once Fox officially meets Claire, he realizes the task might not be as simple as he once thought.
Though in most readers minds, I'm sure they thought the bet was outrageous, but it had a specific point. To show the world that two complete and total opposites could be practically perfect for each other in every way. Rodale gives her readers two intricate and defined characters at opposite ends of the spectrum. Witty banter and lustful longing develop a relationship between the pair that at the beginning I didn't believe was possible. One analogy I loved in the novel was about Fox and Claire being puzzle pieces. They have different curves and edges, but when placed together, they are a perfect fit.
On another note, this series is rather interesting in that it all takes place at roughly the same time. Each sibling has their own story about what happens when they debut into London society after the only male inherits the title of Duke. Now that we have all three sisters story, I'm on pins and needles waiting for brother James' turn in It's Hard Out Here for a Duke.

Lady Claire is a very studious woman who loves numbers. Math makes more sense to her than being social or going to social events. When she goes to a social event, she talks about Math non-stop, which bores all the men. This is why she has been single all this time. When Lord Fox finds her Math discussions amusing, he pursues her, much to the shock of Lady Claire. You see, Lord Fox is a man who is used to winning and to getting what he wants, but his fiance leaves him. And later on, he agrees to a wager: turning Lady Claire into an acceptable woman of society, "the bell of the ton", or lose his most beloved dog. He can't afford to lose this time so his pursual of Lady Claire is even stronger now.
She was confusing and a challenge, but, he realized, she was a game he didn't want to stop playing.
I really enjoyed this opposites attract novel. I especially loved how Lady Claire didn't care for society's standards. She wasn't even interested in being courted. All her devotion and passion went to numbers. Lord Fox is the complete opposite. He could care less about numbers, but he kept being drawn to her, wager or no wager. And when Lady Claire found out, the way he went after her, trying to make things right was just so beautiful and swoony.
"Hate is passion. Love is passion. Sometimes people confuse the two."
The Cavendish siblings had me giggling a lot throughout the story. They are so close to each other and it shows a lot in the way they treat each other with respect. But they also have their funny, quirky and silly conversations that made me feel the sibling love they have for one another. Plus, they seek each other out for advice and I really liked that.
The only character I didn't like at all was Mowbray. He was so infuriating and at times didn't let me enjoy the story because I was so frustrated and irritated by him. He's supposed to be Lord Fox's friend but with friends like him, who needs enemies? He's the one that proposes the wager. He wants to beat Lord Fox at something and he figures this is the perfect way to do so. His eagerness to see his "friend" lose had me beyond mad.
Overall, Lady Claire Is All That is a light and fun book to read. It kept me entertained a lot. I wish a certain character hadn't been so frustrating, but I'm glad things turned out quite well.
