"For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Ernest Hemingway was first published in the year 1940. The story revolves around Robert Jordan, a young American.

Jordon happens to be in the International Brigades which is attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War.

Jordon happens to be a dynamiter. He is given an assignment to blow up a bridge during an assault on the city of Segovia.

"For Whom the Bell Tolls" is often considered as Ernst Hemingway's most significant work. His other famous novels are "The Sun Also Rises", "The Old Man and the Sea", and "A Farewell to Arms."
