These are the writings of Joseph Butler, Anglican bishop and moral philosopher (1692-1752). During the 19th century, interest in Butler grew and numerous editions of his works appeared, especially "The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed to the Course and Constitution of Nature" (1736). This interest culminated in Gladstone's three-volume Clarendon edition in 1896, in which all of Butler's writings were collected, to be followed in 1900 by Bernard's two-volume edition of the works. In addition to Butler's writings, Gladstone appended a third volume of his own "Studies Subsidiary to the Works of Bishop Butler", one part of which is about Butler's positive teachings and the other part of which is about Gladstone's apllication of those teachings to topics in the philosophy of religion.
