Frances Hodgkins was recognized by her contemporaries in the 1930s and 1940s as a leading member of the British avant-garde, exhibiting often with such artists as John Piper and Graham Sutherland. This book focuses on the paintings and drawings of this artist. Three extensive essays explore in depth the development of Hodgkins's artistic practice. She is seen experimenting in a variety of mediums and styles, and an artist working towards her late phase, at its most apparent in her landscapes. Forty full-page colour reproductions each with a detailed description, display Hodgkins's art, her use of colour and handling of subject matter. The book concludes with a chronology and a list of exhibitions.
