I'm so glad that I read a review for LOCK IN that recommended reading this novella first. I was thoroughly impressed with the history of this fictional disease and how much information Scalzi was able to provide in 60+ pages, while maintaining some really emotional aspects.

This wasn't just a dry historical telling of something. The characters had personality and some of the stories brought me to tears.

I was already looking forward to reading LOCK IN - now I really can't wait!

Novela corta que acompaña a Locked-in y que explica con más detalle la llegada del virus de Haden a la Humanidad. Al estilo de las crónicas de World War Z, con la novela cosida a base de entrevistas. Muy entretenido. Lo leí antes que Locked-in y no chafa detalles; al contrario, ayuda a que cuando el autor nos introduce en el mundo de los Hadens ya todo nos suene.

"Unlocked" is the backstory of the world created in Scalzi's Lock In. Rather than starting the story off with hundreds of pages of background, he jumps directly into the narrative, hooking you into. If the book had started with Unlocked, it would've been more difficult to hold my attention. Reading it after the fact as background on the world was just right though.

For only 32 pages, the author has managed to transport me to future America where the world is in chaos due to the Haden Syndrome. The world Scalzi created was realistic and scary. And even though this one was more of a journal, I still feel some sort of a connection to all the people who gave their testimonials about the disease.

John Scalzi's humor was praiseworthy. His talent to turn a very dire situation into something funny was almost unbelievable. With this said, I think I'm going to snatch Lock In as soon as I have breathing space.
