1919 - Ruth is a wealthy young woman with many wealthy friends. The war is a busy time entertaining troops, knitting sweaters, rolling bandages, and an opportunity for young men to use their families wealth and influence to obtain positions as officers. On the way to a Red Cross meeting, Ruth is delayed by the sight of young men leaving to fight in the war. When she sees the fear on the faces of the families as they say good-bye the reality of the war becomes clear to her. She sees a childhood friend, as his mother clings to him, she remembers the kindness he showed to her when she was a scared little girl. John Cameron tries to reassure his mother but he is worried about the future. He is not afraid to die for his country but he is confused about what comes after death. As he stands on the bottom step of the train he spots Ruth, she seemed to be telling him to be strong and come home.
