Daniel Defoe (1659-1731) was an prolific and versatile writer, pamphleteer and spy, one of the founders of the English novel, who gained fame for his famous novel Robinson Crusoe. Defoe based part of the narrative of Robinson on the story of the castaway Alexander Selkirk, who spent four years stranded on the island of Juan Fernandez. The novel has been variously read as an allegory for the development of civilisation. In 1685, Defoe joined the ill-fated Monmouth Rebellion but gained a pardon by which he escaped the Bloody Assizes of Judge George Jeffreys, however, not all of Defoe's pamphlet writing was political. This collection contains his best works, in their original editions: Atalantis Major, The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, The King of Pirates, Captain Singleton, Memoirs of a Cavalier, Moll Flanders & Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress.
