This series examines what life was like for people in Britain during World War II. Each title takes a different aspect of civilian life, and looks at its dangers, difficultes and pleasures. Much of the story is told by eye-witness accounts. This title describes the evacuation of mothers and children from cities to the countryside in 1939, which was the largest movement of people ever seen in Britain. In France and Germany, too, people were evacuated from danger areas. It describes how the evacuation was planned and executed, what it was like to be an evacuee, and what it was like to live in one of the reception areas. It also explains the different phases of evacuation during the war. The author has written several other historical books for children, including "War at Home", "War in the Far East", and "The First World War 1914-1918" (2 vols).
