In poverty stricken Ireland in 1825, Jack Riordan faces a choice - starve or join the British Army. He Joins the Army, and in a tumuluous career, he serves in Australia, India, Afghanistan and New Zealand, rising to the rank of Colour Sergeant and decorated for his courage. He leaves the Army and sails to Australia, where he forges a career as a mounted police Sergeant. In India, he marries Harriett, a part-Indian woman with mystical qualities. They have many children. Jack and Harriett begin a large and successful family in their new country.
