Phil Gates is a well-known naturalist who has recorded numerous broadcasts with the BBC Natural History Unit for Radio 4. He has also written 17 science books for young people and won several literary awards. His science journalism has appeared in many newspapers including the Sunday Post; Northern Echo and the Guardian, and he was a regular columnist for BBC Gardeners' World magazine and BBC Wildlife. He teaches biology at Durham University and writes three science/natural history blogs: Cabinet of Curiosities, Beyond the Human Eye and A Digital Botanic Garden.
